Savage
Make: Savage
Model: 1899
Serial #: 173xxx
Caliber: 250-3000/.410
Description: Savage: Model 1899 “RARE” Takedown 250-3000/Combo/.410 Shotgun. #173xxx; Made Early 1917; All Original. Near mint Factory Curved Perch Belly Checkered, Varnished 2x-grain, Fiddle-back, Dark Walnut Varnished stock.; with original 13 1/4 inch LOP; Straight Snobble tip with Checkering, Sporting windguage Rear Peep sight with Knurled Knobs on each side.; 22 Inch Round Tapered Barrel, Period Swivels. Shotgun Butt with Oval Savage Indian Logo on Toe, Mint Bores, This is the ONLY Combo I’ve owned in my entire collecting of 40 years. 98/99% Blue, 85% Case Colors. $5995 ; Wouldn't it be nice if we all looked & operated this Great at 94 years old ! ; On the Super Rare occasion, When I see any Savage model 1899 Combo in this condition that is nearly a Century old it normally has a price-tag of $6,000 or more. Even then, it was usually a 30-30/.410 , OR some other caliber. I haven't had the Privilege of seeing ANY (250-3000/.410 Combo other then this one in a good decade + ) The last (250-3000/.410 Combo) I saw was in the late 1990's and was about $8,000 back then ! Please reference: ( "The History of the SAVAGE" by; Murray, pages 3-29, 3-30, 3-31, 3-46, 3-47, 3-48, 3-49, ). This rifle went for $40 in 1917. The .410 barrel cost about $20 (= HALF again as much as the Rifle itself ! ) These Savages' were made ONLY from 1914 to 1921, in the serial range of 146,500 to 237,500. The .410 Shotgun barrel was introduced in 1922. Obviously; the Gent who bought this purchased it at the same time as when it was for sale at his local store, or at the Factory. Guns often sat in the factory & on the shelf for years. So when the optional .410 combo barrel was avialable at the Factory or the store, he bought them both , with all the options. I think the daily wage was about $1 (if that much) back in 1917 ! Quoted from Murray's book; = ( " The Savage .250-3000 rifle was the first 1899 to incorporate the most popular Special Order features available in earlier years, such as the capped/Checkered pistol gripstock, takedown barrel, curved lever loop with rounded end, fine checkered foreend, and rapid taper 22 inch barrel." ) *** And this Savage 250-3000/.410 Combo has all of these features ! And; It is All original ! Indeed this is a "VERY RARE" Savage to have. PS: Sorry; but the bear in my pictures doesn't go with the rifle ! You'll have to go get your own. .... ( Page 3-47 Shows the Shotgun shells are 2 1/2 inch in Length. ) This same page also shows that These 22 inch model 1899 savages were considered Featherweight Lengths. This being the very first of the Featherweight Savages.
******** PPS: I almost forgot; The Old Gent about 80+ years old gave me this Savage instuction Hang tag. I can't remember if he said it was his or his dads or what etc.... but it might just be original to the rifle. Also; The peep sight is actually earlier than the rifle. (See my pics) It is an Elevating, Adjustable Lyman peep with the smaller interior finite' peep sight actually dated " Pat JUL 25.25.05-Oct.15.07) Very desireable to say the least. The factory probably put on an older peep site that they still had on hand. That makes the peep sight 101 years old. WOW ! and it works perfectly too !
