The Smith and Wesson Letter shows Serial number 58,706 was shipped May 16, 1939 to Board of Works & Saftey, Evansville, Police Dept., Evansville, Indiana. Shipped with a 4 inch barrel, Baughman Quick Draw front sight, Square notch rear sight, Hump Back Hammer, Nickel finish and Magna grips. It is Engraved to Captain Hooe of the Evansville, Police Department, And Presented by City Judge Marion J. Rice. It is Very Rare to actually have a four inch Nickel Registered magnum of any kind that will factory letter, much less in this nice of condition and lettering to the CAPTAIN of a Police Deptment with copies of proof & dates of their obituaries to validate it's collectability. The Smith & Wesson Letter says: " Your Smith & Wesson Model 629 Stainless Steel .44 Magnum Original PROTOTYPE Serial number N629,100 was shipped October 10, 1980 & delivered to Rex Rhodes, East Granby, Ct. For..........Dave Simons, Vice President of Law Enforcement Sales, Smith & Wesson. This revolver was assembled by " ME " .......(Note Assembled by Smith & Wesson Historian Mr. Roy Jinks )...... by "ME" in November of 1978 and taken with five others, to the N.A.S.G.W. as display Models. The Model 629 was announced at a press conference held in Denver, Co., on December 1, 1978. During 1979 this revolver was used by various writers for magazine stories and by "MYSELF" on a Bear Hunting Trip. In April of 1980 "I" returned the revolver to Smith & Wesson and it processed through the Service Department where it was completely refurbished. Description: A Tri-secutive Trio of: First Month Production 44 Magnums Pre Model 29’s,All are 6 ½” Blue, Serial numbers S-130,951, S-130,952; & S-130,953 Extremely Rare; All Three have The Type 1 (6 grooves Backstap). There are actually Two Types of BackStaps. The Type 1 has (6 grooves Backstap) This is the Earliest Type. The Type 2 has ( 10 grooves Backstap). All Three have The Early True Coke Bottle Grips (& are in Mint condition as are all 3 S&W's). All Three have The Early Dark Blue Presentation Case "Button" style Latch with Pebble grained textured exterior., lined with Blue Satin interior finish. This "Button" style Factory customized Presentation case was only made for about 6 months. All Three have Smith & Wesson Letters showing Documented Validation & shipping dates; tools,brochures & more. S-130,927 was the First S&W magnum that was completed on Dec. 15th, 1955. (800+40 = 840 Total). These Plain Revolvers were all Even numbered. So, ( # BBY0430, & BBY0432 ), are Consecutive numbers AND they are either the Last Two, if not the next to last of these Kit Guns made.
